A Guide to Hospital Jobs
When you put together NHS hospitals and private facilities it is easy to see why hospitals play such an important role in employment terms. Even the smallest hospital unit needs a variety of staff to keep it running smoothly and, as this guide to hospital jobs will show you, this isn’t just about medical jobs!
In basic terms jobs in hospitals will split into two types: clinical and non-clinical. Let’s take a quick look at both types of job.
1. Clinical jobs - clinical jobs in hospitals are the ones carried out by medical professionals. So, a typical hospital in this scenario could employ a variety of clinical specialists such as:
- Doctors and Nurses
- Nursing specialists such as Midwives
- Technicians such as MRI and X-ray Operators and Lab Technicians
- Therapists such as Physiotherapists
- Pharmacists
- Dieticians
Medical professionals here may be fully trained or may be undergoing practical training by working in the hospital.
2. Non-clinical jobs - non-clinical jobs are just as important as clinical ones when it comes to keeping a hospital running smoothly. Typical jobs here could include:
- Directors and Managers
- Administrative and support functions
- Financial specialists
- HR
- Social Workers
- IT specialists
- Catering specialists
- Cleaning staff
- Porters
Finding jobs in hospitals will vary in difficulty depending on where you are looking, what qualifications/experience you have and what kind of job you want to do. Some hospitals will recruit staff direct and some will use recruitment agencies to do the job for them. In some cases hospital services are contracted out to other companies (this is often the case with catering and cleaning services for example) so people here will get their jobs in hospital on a contract basis - i.e. they will work for the contractor rather than the hospital.
